Board checklist
The 8-point AI governance checklist for boards
Based on the Voluntary AI Safety Standard and the Privacy Act. Work through it once a year.
01Name one accountable owner
A senior person owns AI use, risk and reporting to the board.
02Keep an AI register
List every AI tool and use case, who uses it and what data it touches.
03Set your risk appetite
Agree which uses are fine, which need approval and which are off limits.
04Protect personal information
Apply the Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles to every AI tool and prompt.
05Keep a human in charge
People review AI output before it affects customers, staff or patients.
06Be open about AI use
Tell people when AI helps make a decision or creates content they see.
07Check vendors and contracts
Know where data is stored, whether it trains models and who is liable.
08Train, test and review
Train staff, test tools before rollout and report to the board at least yearly.
