Short answer: for most work, Claude is the better daily tool. It writes more carefully, reads much longer documents and is excellent at code. Pick ChatGPT if you want image generation, a polished voice mode and the widest set of built-in extras in one app.
I build AI products for a living, including two iPhone apps, and I use both tools every week. This comparison is based on that daily use, checked against each company’s own pricing and documentation as of 9 October 2026. Prices and limits change often, so I will refresh this page every quarter.
Claude vs ChatGPT at a glance
Here is how the two compare on the things Australian teams ask about most. AUD prices are approximate: both companies list a US$20 price, and the amount you pay depends on your billing currency and 10% GST.
| Claude | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Yes, with daily limits | Yes, with limits |
| Main paid plan | Pro: US$20/month (about A$30–35 with GST) | Plus: US$20/month (about A$30–35 with GST) |
| Team plans | Team and Enterprise, priced per seat | Business and Enterprise, priced per seat |
| Context window | Up to 1 million tokens on current Sonnet and Opus models (API) | Depends on plan and mode; larger in Thinking mode |
| Coding | Excellent; Claude Code runs in your terminal and editor | Very good; Codex for agent-style coding |
| Images | Reads images; does not create photos | Reads and creates images |
| Data in Australia | Not on personal plans; available via cloud providers with Australian regions | Data at rest in Australia for eligible Enterprise, Edu and API customers |
Which is better for writing and documents?
Claude is better for most writing at work. It follows a brief closely, keeps a consistent tone, and can read a long report, contract or transcript in one go and answer questions about any part of it. ChatGPT writes well too, but tends to sound more generic unless you guide it.
The difference shows up most with long inputs. A context window is how much text the model can hold in mind at once. Anthropic’s documentation lists up to 1 million tokens (very roughly 750,000 words) for its current Sonnet and Opus models through the API. In the ChatGPT app, the limit depends on your plan and whether you use the fast chat or Thinking mode, and OpenAI lists those limits on its pricing page.
In practice: if you regularly drop in board papers, policies, research or meeting transcripts, Claude will lose the thread less often.
Which is better for coding?
Both are strong, and the gap is smaller than online debates suggest. I reach for Claude first because Claude Code works directly in my terminal and editor and handles large codebases well. ChatGPT’s Codex does similar agent-style work. Test both on a real task from your own project.
For developers, the bigger choice is the workflow, not the chat window. Claude Code and Codex can read your repository, run tests and propose changes for you to review. If your team is new to this way of working, start with small, well-tested tasks and always review the changes before they ship.
What does ChatGPT do better?
ChatGPT is the better all-in-one app. It creates images inside the chat, its voice mode is smooth enough for real conversations, and it has the biggest range of built-in extras, from custom GPTs to shopping and travel features. If your team wants one tool that does a bit of everything, ChatGPT is the easier sell.
- Images: ChatGPT makes and edits pictures. Claude can read images and draw simple diagrams, but does not create photos or illustrations.
- Voice: ChatGPT’s voice mode is more mature for hands-free use.
- Familiarity: most staff have already tried ChatGPT, so there is less to learn.
Is my work data safe with Claude or ChatGPT?
It depends on the plan, not the brand. On personal plans, both companies may use your chats to improve their models unless you switch that off in settings. Their business and enterprise plans do not train on your data by default and add admin controls.
Data residency is a separate question. OpenAI offers storage of data at rest in Australia to eligible ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu and API customers, though it notes that processing (inference) can still happen elsewhere. Anthropic opened a Sydney office in 2026, and Claude is also available through major cloud providers, some of which run it in Australian regions. If residency matters to you, confirm the exact terms in writing.
Choose Claude if… / Choose ChatGPT if…
Choose Claude if
- You work with long documents: reports, contracts, policies or transcripts.
- You care about clear, careful writing that sounds like you.
- You write code, or want to build with an AI coding agent.
- You want fewer distractions and a focused tool for thinking work.
Choose ChatGPT if
- You need images for slides, social posts or mock-ups.
- You want a strong voice mode for hands-free use.
- Your team already uses it and you want the smallest change.
- You want one app with the most built-in features.
What do I recommend for Australian teams?
For most knowledge-work teams, I recommend Claude as the main tool for writing, analysis and code, with ChatGPT available for images and voice. For larger organisations, the plan matters more than the brand: choose a business plan, set a short AI policy and train people on good prompting and safe data habits.
That training is where most of the value is. In our AI training for teams, we run the same real tasks through both tools so people can see the difference for themselves. Leaders weighing up risk and policy can start with the executive AI programme. And if you want to go further than chat, read what agentic AI is or our Gemini vs ChatGPT comparison.
