Short answer: if your team lives in Google Workspace, Gemini is the better pick because it works inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets. For almost everyone else, ChatGPT is the more flexible all-rounder, with more features and a bigger ecosystem of custom tools.
I use both while building AI products and teaching teams. This guide compares them on price, context window, everyday work and data, checked on 9 October 2026. Prices and features change often, so I refresh this page every quarter.

Which is better for everyday work?
It depends on where you work. In Google Workspace, Gemini saves the most time because you never leave Gmail or Docs. If your organisation runs on Microsoft 365, or you mostly work in a browser chat, ChatGPT is the stronger general assistant, with better custom tools and a more polished app.
The real cost of an AI tool is the copying and pasting. Gemini removes that for Google users: it can summarise a long email thread, draft a reply in your tone, or turn a Doc into slides. ChatGPT is better at open-ended work, such as thinking through a plan, writing from scratch or running a custom GPT your team has built.
Which handles long documents better?
Gemini has the edge on paper. Google advertises a 1 million token context window for its Pro models, enough for hundreds of pages, long recordings or a video. ChatGPT’s window depends on your plan and whether you use Thinking mode. For very long files, Gemini or Claude are safer choices.
A large window does not guarantee a good answer. Ask for page or section references so you can check the source, and split very large jobs into smaller questions.
How do Gemini and ChatGPT compare on price in Australia?
Both have free plans that are good enough to try. Google AI Pro costs about A$32.99 a month in Australia and also includes extra Google storage, which some households already pay for. ChatGPT Plus lists at US$20 a month; with currency conversion and 10% GST, Australians typically pay roughly A$30 to A$35. Check the final price at checkout.
For teams, the maths changes. Many Google Workspace business plans now include Gemini, so a Google-based business may already be paying for it. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise are separate per-seat subscriptions.
Which is safer for business data?
Use business accounts for business data, whichever tool you choose. Google says that data in Workspace is not used to train its models without permission, and OpenAI says its business plans do not train on your data by default. Personal accounts on both services have looser defaults.
If you need data kept in Australia, both companies have options for larger customers. OpenAI offers storage of data at rest in Australia to eligible Enterprise, Edu and API customers. Google Cloud’s Vertex AI lets developers pick a region, and some Gemini models are available in Australian regions.
Choose Gemini if… / Choose ChatGPT if…
Choose Gemini if
- Your organisation uses Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets and Drive.
- You work with very long files, recordings or video.
- You already pay for Google storage and want AI in the same plan.
Choose ChatGPT if

- You want custom GPTs and the widest range of features in one app.
- You mostly use AI for open-ended thinking, planning and writing.
What is my verdict?
There is no single winner. Gemini wins inside Google Workspace; ChatGPT wins as a stand-alone assistant. If you write a lot of long-form content or code, also look at our Claude vs ChatGPT comparison.
